Almost half of the British population (40%) fail to budget for their summer holiday, the latest research from M&S Money reveals.

Despite the overspending that this might cause, almost a third of those surveyed (32%) think they will spend more on holiday this year than last year.

People justify this behaviour saying that a summer holiday is their ‘one luxury’ for the year.

The justification for a further 14% of people who never stick to budgets is that they believe ‘there’s no point in setting one’. Additionally, one in ten Brits says they can’t plan ahead because they don’t know how much everyday items will cost at their holiday destination.

Change of attitude

Despite excusing their overspending, the current financial situation makes most people realise they need to establish savings measures.

A total of 63% of Brits will make some kind of cut back, even if they don’t plan a strict budget. 15% will try to save some money by spending less on in-flight and airport shopping and 12% plan to cut the length of their holiday.

British summer travellers will also modify their holiday eating habits in an attempt to save money: 12% said they will stay in self catering accommodation and a further 11% plan to stay in ‘all inclusive’ resorts.

Some holidaymakers will also consider the value of sterling dropping against popular UK holiday destinations. Of those travelling within the euro zone, 8% plan to take ‘home comforts’ in their luggage, such as tea and coffee, in a bid to reduce costs once they arrive.

First-time buyers at highest level

Figures released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders reveal that a total of 18,100 loans (worth £2.2 billion) were given to first-time buyers. Those statistics are 24% higher than in May.

In direct relation to mortgages, 28,600 loans (worth £4.6 billion) were taken out in July; which is up from 23,800 (£3.7 billion) in May, but down from 32,800 loans in June 2010.

Overall, last June saw up to £6.7 billion spent in 46,700 loans for house purchases.

“Whilst there are clearly financial uncertainties ahead, it is encouraging to see more house buyers surfacing at the start of summer. Recent increases in Bank of England approvals figures also show that more completions are expected in July, so the more encouraging numbers may persist for a while,” said Council of Mortgage Lenders Director, Paul Smee.

“It’s understandable that people don’t want the perceived hassle of changing their current account, but as we go through life, our financial needs change. Without regular financial reviews, we run the risk of living with a potentially costly and outdated current account which no longer serves our needs,” said John Crossley, head of current accounts at Nationwide.

In the past five years, a total £468 million worth of gadgets – 9.3 million devices – have been thrown away after a short period of use, a report from Swiftcover insurance shows.

“Inflation is generally considered to be something that only affects adults, but it’s evident from our research that children have been impacted too while inflation has been creeping up over the past few years,” said Nici Audhlam-Gardner, director of banking at Santander.

“Children are seeing the costs of their everyday purchases rising at a very worrying rate, and parents are also being impacted with the costs of children’s items apparently increasing more than the standard adult measure of inflation.”

The research, by insurance company Esure, found that one in ten Brits ask neighbours and friends to move their car into different parking spots while they are away.

The news comes as burglaries in the UK are confirmed as being on the rise. People are not just relying on home security to protect their property but the concept of barking animals as well.

One in eight people under the age of 25 now use Facebook and other social networking websites to advertise their whereabouts.

The average amount spent on a friend who is getting married is £43, where as two years ago this was just £34. Back in 2009 people would spend on average £27 on acquaintances or wider family members but this has now risen to £37.

The research reveals that women spend more on close family members than men, splashing out an average of £148 compared to the £131 average of their male counterparts. However, men who are more likely to spend money on their mates, splashing out £48 compared to the £40 that women do.

Generous Brits are starting to feel the pinch however.

Findings show that 15% of people are trying to reduce the amount they spend on weddings, with 1 in 5 of those questioned saying they feel obliged to spend more on gifts to the newly weds.

“Inflation and other economic concerns are having a real effect on people’s expenditure, but our research suggests that wedding presents are bucking the trend.

Weddings can be hugely expensive for guests if you have to factor in a stag or hen weekend, transport, and accommodation, but their gift-giving generosity seems to be greater than ever,” said Rob Holt, Director of Santander Cards.

“It would seem that for many, sun, sea and sand on a holiday abroad is not on the cards this year, and instead it’s the local park, pool and Peppa Pig on DVD,” added Jones.
